A Welcome Fall
Today was the Hellgate Duathlon, a race that I have either raced or volunteered, for many years. It is the last official race on the Team Stampede (Montana) race calendar. I have always loved it because it's fall. The air is crisp and snow has already fallen in the mountains. The aspen leaves have turned and all but fallen off and the air is still. It's the quiet that I enjoy...right before the storm of winter sets in.
I hope my friends all had an enjoyable race. I'm sure they did. As for me, I have been enjoying the southern fall. It's finally cool enough that I can run with some clothes on and I have been taking advantage of this in order to begin advancing my mileage. The last three weeks have been 25 to 34 miles per week and I am feeling good. I'm getting that base that I used to have back and it feels good.
The leaves are turning here too. Some light rain has softened up the ground and I have found some good trails to run on. Life is good!
Today I met the Charlotte Running Club for an early morning run at McAlpine Park. This is a nationally recognized cross country course and is loaded with trails to run. Today we racked up a dozen miles that went over easy.
Last weekend was my Solo Sunday Run at the U.S. Whitewater training Center. The pictures here are from that run. I clocked a hilly 11 miles with about 1200 vertical feet of climbing. The trail system there is extensive and are ideal for running and mountain biking.
So with my recent success of injury-free running and mileage building, it looks like I'll give running another marathon a go. Right now I am seriously considering running Austin, TX in February. It's not inked yet, pending a move to Clovis, New Mexico for my next job, but it looks hopeful. And I am hopeful to be healthy and ready to run a solid marathon by then.
Who knows...maybe I'll even be in shape enough for a new PR. We can always dream, right?
